Palliative Care

Navigating the journey of end-of-life care is one of the most profound experiences that individuals and their loved ones may face. This period is marked by a confluence of emotions, ranging from fear and uncertainty to love and reflection. It is a time when the focus shifts from curative treatment to providing comfort, dignity, and support for those nearing the end of their life.

The goal of end-of-life care is to ensure that individuals live their final days with the highest possible quality of life, free from pain and distress, and in accordance with their personal wishes and values. End-of-life care encompasses a broad spectrum of services, including physical, emotional, and spiritual support. It is a holistic approach that involves not only the patient but also their family and close friends. Care is provided by healthcare professionals who work collaboratively to address the unique needs of each individual.

Palliative care aims to relieve suffering and improve the quality of life for patients. It addresses physical symptoms such as pain, nausea, and shortness of breath, as well as emotional and psychological challenges. By focusing on the whole person, palliative care provides a compassionate and supportive environment where patients and their families can find comfort and solace.

Matter of Care nurses and carers, and other professionals are trained to identify and ethically manage the priority symptoms which would typically include:

  • Pain
  • Dyspnea
  • Respiratory tract secretions
  • Fatigue
  • Anorexia
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Anxiety
  • Constipation
  • Delirium
  • Depression

Matter of Care nurses and carers will work with the patient’s care team to identify appropriate pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches for the management of individual symptoms.
