Government Care Subsidy Program

Objective

To offer community-based support, the government provides financial assistance to senior citizens (aged 60+) who employ a carer of their choice to help with daily needs. This scheme is available in both Malta and Gozo.

Financial Support

  • Up to €8,500 per year, provided once the application is approved.

  • Paid monthly directly into the applicant’s nominated bank account.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Must be aged 60 years or older.

  • The employed carer must hold a recognized qualification; if obtained abroad, equivalence via MQRIC (Malta Qualifications Recognition Information Centre) may be required.

  • Applicants aged 60–79 undergo an assessment to verify genuine need.

  • Applicants 80+ years old are automatically eligible, assuming other criteria are met.

Required Documentation

Applicants must submit:

  • Completed application form, including a medical report signed by a General Practitioner.

  • Copy of the carer’s qualification (and its MQRIC evaluation if foreign).

  • Copy of the employment agreement, notarized.

  • Official documentation from Jobsplus, and for third-country nationals, Identità, confirming the carer is in regular employment.

Application Process & Timelines (from Quality Service Charter — Mar 25, 2025)

  • Submit application (online, email, post, or in person at designated centres in Malta and Gozo).

  • Acknowledgement of receipt within 1 working day.

  • Telephone assessment completed within 3 working days (for ages 60–79).

  • If found ineligible, a case conference is held within 3 weeks.

  • Decision letter (approval or refusal) dispatched within 2 working days following the outcome.
