To offer community-based support, the government provides financial assistance to senior citizens (aged 60+) who employ a carer of their choice to help with daily needs. This scheme is available in both Malta and Gozo.
Financial Support
Up to €8,500 per year, provided once the application is approved.
Paid monthly directly into the applicant’s nominated bank account.
Eligibility Criteria
Must be aged 60 years or older.
The employed carer must hold a recognized qualification; if obtained abroad, equivalence via MQRIC (Malta Qualifications Recognition Information Centre) may be required.
Applicants aged 60–79 undergo an assessment to verify genuine need.
Applicants 80+ years old are automatically eligible, assuming other criteria are met.
Required Documentation
Applicants must submit:
Completed application form, including a medical report signed by a General Practitioner.
Copy of the carer’s qualification (and its MQRIC evaluation if foreign).
Copy of the employment agreement, notarized.
Official documentation from Jobsplus, and for third-country nationals, Identità, confirming the carer is in regular employment.
Application Process & Timelines (from Quality Service Charter — Mar 25, 2025)
Submit application (online, email, post, or in person at designated centres in Malta and Gozo).
Acknowledgement of receipt within 1 working day.
Telephone assessment completed within 3 working days (for ages 60–79).
If found ineligible, a case conference is held within 3 weeks.
Decision letter (approval or refusal) dispatched within 2 working days following the outcome.
